Took a lunch break to harvest some of the epic autumnal vegetables we have for dinner. Still picking zucchini and chillis(hello climate change) but also picked the first big bundles of kale, pak choi, celery and spinach along with the first beetroot and staples of chard and chayote. Beautiful harvest - so much great organic food for the whānau. Back to work……
Around 10,000 workers from 70 health professions walk off the job today. They're asking for a wage that reflects the increasing costs of living.
I spent the afternoon and evening with some of the incredible team @omg_akl and @fortheloveofbeesnz , where I'm lucky enough to be a trustee.
Tick tock it's Chayote O'clock.
I loved this conversation with the incredible Dr Chelsea Mikael Frazier @amazon_scholar from the Green Dreamer podcast.
Autumn harvests are looking a bit like this - we still have trombocino zucchini (thanks @maunga_kereru for the seeds, what a winner!), a few last tomatoes here and there, and then a great many figs, feijoas, lettuce, kale, chard and spring onions. .
I remember first hearing you speak nearly twenty years ago - it was at an education conference in Napier and you were presenting a keynote about Te Tiriti and the experience of Māori in education, justice and health. A story of alienation and rupture - of violence and deep injustice.
Yesterday afternoon the NZAEE (NZ Association for Environmental Education) hosted a webinar for schools and teachers on local curriculum design and sustainability.
First and lasts in the harvest today. The first chayote and feijoa are ready, the last tomatoes, passionfruit and apples are picked. Figs keep on a-cropping, as does the rambicante, a type of zucchini. Chillies are starting to come in now too which is wonderful news for Marcus who loooooves them. But right there in the centre, are the apple of my eye - the very first eggplants we've managed to grow here outside, in our short and mild summer. I left them on the plants for as long as possible hoping they'd get a bit bigger, but now the temperatures have dropped, I've decided to pick them. I'll get back to you on how edible they are! And next year I'll try again!
Next year's summer blooms start right here with this year's seedheads.
