Pretty proud to be in the latest monthly issue of NZ Life & Leisure. It’s a sneak peek of an article that will feature in the “In Your Backyard: Sustainability through the Seasons” guide which comes out late March.
And now it is Apple Season. The season highly preferred by my boys over Asparagus Season - but equally short and prodigious. . We picked a few apples and sat in the garden together to check their status - a small one with a touch of red, a large one with a touch of red, a small and green one , a large and green one - and cut them up with a knife. . We hypothesised which would be the tastiest first and then through a blind taste test, found out together, all the while chatting naturally on a Saturday about ethylene gas and sugars and sunshine and the colour of seeds in the sweetest apples. . It was total contentment and, unlike so much of what Instagram is about, even more magic than this video suggests. . What is an education if it is not rooted deeply in the ways our own thriving is inextricably linked to our natural and generous world?
Me: “ I just have to pop out to get something for dinner.” . The Garden: “Ta-da.” . (And the first capsicums and chillis of the summer. 🌶 💥 )
I woke up sleepily this morning to find Mr 5 outside in the yard, in his pyjamas, quietly admiring the chicks as they ate the food he’d put out for them. A beautiful way to start the day. . Also, these are the baby leghorn chicks we hatched not quite 7 weeks ago. Unbelievably gorgeous white feathered bundles now - due in no small part to @raumati_laura ‘s diligent hen sitting whilst we were away. . We seem to have two cockerels and four pullets, which is an exceptionally good result. . We are currently sourcing a rehoming option for the cockerels - as we can’t keep roosters where we live. . If you live in the Kāpiti/Horowhenua/Wairarapa regions and want two purebred leghorn cockerels, or know someone who will, hit me up!

I’ll never tire of watching tomatoes ripening on the vine. Ombré in nature.
